    STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE 3 COLLEGE CREDITS FROM MOHAWK VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE PROGRAM ONLY IF THEY SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE COURSE.  ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS MUST ALSO BE MET IN ORDER TO EARN MOHAWK VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE CREDIT.
     
     
     
    Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are emphasized and developed within the content of business and industrial applications.  Written, oral, and computer assiginments are used to improve communication skills.  Modes of communication as well as the basic mechanics are studied.
     
    Communication is critical in any business and doing it well can lead to increased employee satisfaction and productivity, as well as increased sales and customer satisfaction.
     

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

     

    There are five specific learning objectives for this course:

     

    1)   Learn to build and work effectively in teams.

    2)  Enhance written, oral communication.

    3)  Understand the cross disciplinary nature of business problems and strategies.

    4)  Review and expand computer software knowledge with Microsoft Office Suite.

    5)   Use ethical thinking in solving business problems.

     

     

    METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:

     

    The class will be conducted in an active learning format where you will be asked to participate. The role of the instructor is to help you develop critical business skills.  These include:

     

    Teamwork ~~ Students will work on several assignments (cases and team exercises) in teams and will be graded both on the quality of the final output as well as their team contribution.

     

    Develop writing skills ~~  Student teams will collaborate on written assignments and editing for a number of case studies. In addition there will be other individual writing assignments.

     

    Effective oral presentation skills ~~   Each team will formally present  one of the cases to the class, as assigned by the instructor. Each member of the team will be graded individually on their part of the case presentation.  In addition students will have many opportunities to contribute to class discussion.

     

    Strategic, critical, cross-discipline, and ethical thinking ~~  Many of the class exercises and business cases will require you to apply strategic, cross-discipline, or ethical thinking.

     
     

    Throughout the semester the student will be asked to complete many exercises and assignments.  The student will have the opportunity to complete much of this work during class.  The student’s willingness to utilize this valuable class time to work on these assignments will be evaluated in the Class Participation / Work Ethic portion of the grade.  In addition, the assignments may be due at the end of class.  In this case, failure to utilize class time appropriately may impact the Class work and Class Participation grades.


    It is THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to make up missed work.  Work can be made up during study halls or after school.


    Academic dishonesty will be dealt with in accordance with school policy.
