Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, it is possible that a growing number of schools across the country, including in New York State, will experience a temporary closure to prevent and/or limit the spread of COVID-19.
On March 9, 2020, the New York State Education Department (SED) issued new guidance concerning efforts to effectively address COVID-19. Most notably, SED is mandating that a school must close for a minimum of 24 hours if a student or staff member attended school prior to being confirmed as a COVID-19 case. In such an event, the New York State Department of Health (DOH) would begin an investigation to determine the contacts the individual may have had within the school environment. That investigation will inform the plan determined by the local department of health as to any further required closure, or other necessary precautions to take for specific classrooms, or for specific individuals. Such plan must recommend actions for future positive COVID-19 cases as well.
Should the Westmoreland Central School District be forced to close for a period of time due to COVID-19, per New York State guidelines, the district will do everything possible to ensure that educational instruction for students in K-12 continues via online learning. The district will also do everything possible to ensure essential services, such as free and reduced priced meals and counseling, remain available.
