Build A Beast

This week, students developed their own “Build a Beast” designs to share with their families.

Students learned about several different habitats including deserts, the arctic tundra, deciduous forests, rainforests, and the oceans.  They studied their climates and characteristics along with challenges that plants and animals who live there face.  Students then explored many different adaptations that the living things developed in order to survive in their habitats.

Next, student teams were given a habitat, the type of food that their animal eats, and its predators.  Using the knowledge they had acquired, they had to design an animal that could successfully survive under those conditions.

Groups brainstormed ideas and recorded them in an organizer.  Using those ideas they drew a picture of their animals and then built a three dimensional model of their animal using a variety of materials. The final step was to write a paragraph explaining their animal’s challenges and adaptations that help them survive in their habitat.
