Doctor speaks with students

WESTMORELAND, N.Y.- On Wednesday, January 10, Dr. Gloria Kennedy from Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and the creator for the Joseph Michael Chubbuck Foundation, Barbara Chubbuck, spoke with students about different types of cancer.

Dr. Kennedy treats all types of children’s cancers and blood disorders, but she specializes in pediatric brain tumors and their long term follow ups. She earned her Doctorate in Medicine from SUNY Upstate Medical Center in 1989. With her decades of knowledge and experience in this field, she spoke with students about the most prominent cancers and their leading causes. One of the many topics students in the Jr./Sr. High School learned about was the dangers of e-cigarettes.

Grades second through fourth had a separate session and fifth and sixth also had their own session as messages were different for each group. Barbara Chubbuck, Joseph’s mother, spoke about her own experience standing by her son’s side while he battled cancer.

The district has events planned throughout the months of January and February to educate students and staff on the organization and how they assist Central New Yorkers. We encourage everyone to wear yellow on Friday’s (for a donation) to show support and raise awareness for the foundation.
