WESTMORELAND, N.Y.- The Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Department took time out of their day to teach Primary Elementary School students essential fire safety skills.
Each grade level visited the cafeteria to watch a puppet show that focused on what to do if you’re in a structure that’s on fire and the steps to take if your clothing ever catches fire. The engaging presentation helped students understand important concepts like “Stop, Drop and Roll” in a way that was both memorable and age appropriate.
After the presentation, students went outside where firefighters had set up fire trucks and a large inflatable “smoke house” for students to walk through. This hands on experience gave them a realistic idea of how to safely navigate a building filled with smoke.
Mrs. Kirk’s second grade class eagerly asked questions such as, “Why do the firefighters need so many water bottles?” and “What is this piece of equipment used for?” The firefighters took time to answer each question, ensuring students left with a deeper understanding of their role and responsibilities.
Westmoreland students are fortunate to have such a supportive community that prioritizes their safety. A big thank you to the Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Department for dedicating your time to educate and protect our students!
