As part of the 4th grade Social Studies and ELA curriculum, Mrs. Livermore’s students explored the important role New York State played in the Revolutionary War through an engaging, hands-on learning experience.

Students began the lesson by working in small groups to read short articles connected to the Revolutionary War and the lyrics of “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” Afterward, each group shared their findings with the class, helping to build a deeper understanding of the historical context behind the song.

This year, thanks to an Arts in Education grant, the district was able to acquire 20 dulcimers—four-stringed instruments traditionally used in the Appalachian region. With instruments in hand, students took their learning a step further.

The class then visited the music room, where Ms. Bacon and Ms. Migliore taught students how to play “Yankee Doodle Dandy” on the dulcimer. This unique experience allowed students to connect history, literacy, and music in a meaningful and memorable way.

This interdisciplinary lesson provided students with a creative opportunity to engage with history while learning a new musical skill, bringing the past to life in an exciting way.
