Our 5th grade students recently participated in the “What the Flag of the United States Means to Me” essay contest, sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. This meaningful opportunity encouraged students to reflect on the symbolism of the American flag and express their thoughts through writing.
We are proud to share that 15 students were selected to have a portion of their essays featured as quotable excerpts—an impressive accomplishment that highlights both their creativity and understanding of this important topic.
A special congratulations goes out to our award winners for their outstanding work:
Ava Sullivan – 1st Place ($100)
Kylah Zwiefach – 3rd Place ($75)
Cole Hays – Honorable Mention ($25)
All participating students were invited to attend a recognition ceremony held at Delta Methodist Church on April 15. The event celebrated the students’ achievements and provided an opportunity for them to be recognized for their hard work and thoughtful writing.
We are also proud to share that all 5th grade teachers were in attendance to support and celebrate their students, making the event even more special.
Congratulations to all of our students for their dedication, thoughtful reflections, and for representing our school community so well!

Here are the quoteable quotes that will be published in the 2026 Quote Book:
Did you know that the American flag may mean much more than what you think? In America we have freedom, and freedom allows us to roam around the country free. Another example of freedom could be being able to have the right to vote in federal elections. Other things to describe freedom can be indivisible. Indivisible means unable to be divided or separated. This shows how strong a country we are and when we say the Pledge of Allegiance, it says "Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." This helps us to realize how grateful we need to be that we are free. This is why the flag is so important.
Noah Hugick
America's Flag symbolizes peace, strength, honor, and the history of our country and how far it has come. In America. I have many freedoms. I am very lucky to live in the United States of America, unlike other countries where people can't be themselves and get told what to do or getjudged. Having lots of opportunities lets me be my best in the United States of America. I embrace my country and what it has done for my family and me and I hope our flag keeps reminding us what our country means to all Americans.
McKinlee Little
One thing that the flag means to me is unity. One reason that I think of unity is because the USA is all one nation. The second reason is because it brings people from different places together. The flag of the United States is important because it shows that the country cannot be separated even through hard times.
Aaron Chapin
The US Flag signifies gratefulness to me because I am grateful to live in this country where everyone is free, respected and fair to each other. This is the perfect country to live in. My gratefulness is also because my family and I are so thankful that this country let my dad get his citizenship. My did is so proud of himself and thankful that he received his citizenship at the Naturalization Ceremony for new citizens where each of them received a flag of the United States of America.

Do you know why the flag of the United States of America is important to Americans? It is important because it represents our country. It stands for sacrifice, celebration and respect. Americans celebrate our flag at many holidays throughout the year, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Veteran's Day, a day to honor the people that served in the military. My dad fought in the Afganistan war. I feel very proud that he sacrificed his safety and time with me to fight in the war. People in wars who gave their life to defend our country are good people. In summary, the flag means much more to me than sacrifice, respect and celebration...it symbolizes freedom.

The flag of the United States means to me safety, soldiers, and love. The flag means love to me because people that fight in war risk their lives to save the people in America. Love means you care and do something to save no matter what needs to happen. Love means when things get hard for someone else, you help and care and that is what the American army and veterans do.

The flag of the United States means a lot of wonderful things to a lot of people. To me, it means sacrifice, peace and hope. It means hope because none of the soldiers gave up or failed. They kept going through the hard times. Hundreds and hundreds were wounded but did not give up and fail. They kept going for us and it led us to freedom. All the soldiers that fought had enough hope and courage to win, and that is why we are free today.

Have you ever had someone ask you what the Flag of the United Sates of America means to you? Someone asked me and I said it represents improvement, family and gratefulness. I thought improvement because there is never something perfect, so there is always something we can improve. For example, we can help the health of all our people. We can also give fairness to our people because some don't have enough, but others have it all. We need that good in-between. There is always more room to grow and improve.

Who wouldn't want to live in the United States? I would not want to live anywhere else! The flag of the United States means that people have freedom and that people are safe. When I look at the flag it reminds me of all the service members who sacrificed for our freedom. When I look at the flag and recite the Pledge of Allegiance I am giving my loyalty to the United States. We might be 50 states, but we are one nation united in the belief of liberty and justice for all.

What do you think the flag of the United States of America means? I think it means kindness, honor and bravery. I think of honor because we honor the people who sacrifice their lives for all of us and for the people who died protecting us. We honor them because they carved a safe path for everyone, showing kindness by helping each other. The flag is important to all people because it's a symbol of hope for all.
James Logan Barne
One thing the flag means to me is unity. The flag means unity because the people in the United States work together to make our country better. When I look at the flag I think about all the people who joined together to honor the ones who died. I see many people who gathered, who started as strangers, but soon became friends. Unity happens when people join together and that's what the United States of America does.
Emma Lynn Fazekas
The flag of the United States represents peace, unity and respect for the soldiers who died for us. It makes our country what it is today, and it will always stand, never to fall. The flag feels like you are a part of something bigger that yourself. It feels like you're a part of something that you can be proud of.
