Music

Westmoreland Central School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) Award from The NAMM Foundation for their outstanding support and commitment to music education. Now in its 27th year, the program continues to spotlight and celebrate school districts and individual schools across the United States for their exemplary dedication to music education and their ongoing efforts to ensure equitable access to music learning as part of a well-rounded education.

The award reaches K-12 communities nationwide, offering both recognition and momentum to strengthen and expand music education programs. In 2026, more than 1,000 school districts and schools—including public, private, charter and parochial institutions—have been recognized for outstanding achievement in providing access to high-quality music education.

“Music education helps students develop discipline, perseverance, and confidence as they practice and refine their craft, while also learning the value of commitment and teamwork.  Most importantly, music gives students a place to belong.  Participating in music allows students to become more connected to their school and community, building relationships, contributing to shared traditions, and finding pride in being part of something meaningful.” -Kristyn Cutler, Jr./Sr. Music Teacher

"I don't think people understand how important a proper musical education is. Music classes are often referred to as 'specials' or 'electives', but I truly believe that music has been the most impactful opportunity in my high school career. The opportunity to participate in music-oriented classes and extracurriculars has helped me become a passionate, compassionate, and well-rounded person. This is due to the guidance from my music teachers, Mrs. Cutler and Mrs. Davis, with whom I have had the pleasure of forming a relationship for the last six years, an opportunity not available to most other teachers. I am forever grateful for the opportunities my teachers, school, and community have provided me, and hope to become a music teacher myself to continue the positive impact of music education." - Samantha Parzych, Class of 2026

Recipients of the 2026 BCME Awards were selected through a comprehensive application and review process that evaluates key indicators, including funding, instructional time, participation rates, facilities and community support. To uphold the program’s rigor and credibility, all applications were independently reviewed and verified by WolfBrown, a leading research and evaluation firm specializing in education and the arts.
