Fifteen students in grades 9–11 recently joined district administrative staff and an OHM BOCES Transitional Specialist for a comprehensive tour of Wynn Hospital in downtown Utica. The experience provided selected students interested in pursuing healthcare careers after high school with a unique opportunity to learn about the many moving parts involved in operating a state-of-the-art hospital.
Throughout the day, students explored several essential behind-the-scenes components of the hospital, including power generation, water systems, and sanitation pumping stations. They also toured the hospital laboratory and participated in question-and-answer sessions with various hospital staff members, gaining valuable insight into the wide range of careers and responsibilities within the healthcare field.
This educational opportunity was made possible through the New York State grant-funded Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) program. The goal of the Pre-ETS program is to support students as they transition to college or secure long-term employment opportunities, helping them develop the skills needed to become independent and successful adults.
