Students at Westmoreland Primary School have been spending the last several weeks learning important lessons about bullying prevention, kindness, teamwork, and communication. Through engaging discussions and hands-on activities, students have been exploring the differences between bullying and meanness, how to respond when someone is being unkind, and the many ways they can help and support others.
While understanding bullying prevention is an important part of the program, the learning has extended far beyond simply identifying negative behaviors. Students have also been participating in activities specifically designed to strengthen problem-solving skills, encourage teamwork, and help them communicate in positive and respectful ways. These experiences provide students with opportunities to work collaboratively, practice listening skills, and build confidence in handling challenges they may face both in and outside of school.
The program has been facilitated in partnership with ICAN Health and Wellness Coordinators Cori Jasewicz and Tim Moore, ICAN Education and Program Training Manager Jimsak Daoreuang, and Westmoreland Primary School Principal Jessica Maine. Together, they have worked to create meaningful learning experiences that help students build strong social and emotional skills at an early age.
As a culmination of their learning, students in kindergarten through grade 2 attended a special field trip to Elevate CNY. During the visit, students participated in additional group activities designed to reinforce and extend the concepts they have been practicing in school. This experience provided students with another opportunity to strengthen collaboration, communication, and teamwork skills in a fun and engaging environment.
While it is important for children to understand what bullying is and how to respond appropriately, educators recognize that building positive relationship skills is equally important. Teaching students how to work together, communicate kindly, solve problems, and support one another helps prepare them for future challenges and encourages a positive school culture.
These are lifelong skills that Westmoreland students are developing every day, helping them become compassionate classmates, effective communicators, and confident problem solvers.
