Creativity, kindness, and collaboration were on full display as Westmoreland’s Kindergarten and 5th grade students came together for a memorable cross-grade project inspired by The Color Monster.

The journey began in the kindergarten classroom, where students read The Color Monster, a story that helps young learners identify and understand emotions through the use of colors. After discussing feelings such as happiness, sadness, anger, calmness, and love, each kindergartner put their imagination to work by designing and drawing their very own unique color monster.

Those one-of-a-kind creations were then passed along to the 5th grade students, who took on the special challenge of bringing the drawings to life. Using felt, fabric, and plenty of creativity, the older students carefully handcrafted stuffed versions of the monsters, paying close attention to the details and personality captured in each kindergartner’s artwork.

The highlight of the project came when the kindergarten students were paired with their 5th grade partners to receive their finished creations. Smiles, excitement, and heartfelt moments filled the room as the younger students met the classmates who had transformed their drawings into keepsake stuffed animals they can treasure for years to come.

Beyond creating adorable felt monsters, the project fostered meaningful connections between grade levels. The experience encouraged mentorship, teamwork, empathy, and pride in craftsmanship while giving both younger and older students the opportunity to celebrate each other’s talents.

A special thank you goes to Mrs. Davis for coordinating this wonderful project and creating an opportunity for students to learn from one another while making lasting memories.

This collaboration is a perfect example of how creativity and community can come together to make learning both meaningful and unforgettable.
