Student safety is always a top priority at Westmoreland Central School District, and our transportation department recently helped reinforce that commitment by hosting the district’s annual school bus fire drill practice.
Before the school day began, students gathered at the Bus Garage to participate in an important hands-on safety exercise designed to help them understand what to do if they ever need to evacuate a school bus during an emergency. While emergency situations are rare, practicing proper procedures helps students feel more confident and prepared should an unexpected situation occur.
During the drill, students had the opportunity to practice safely and efficiently exiting a school bus. Transportation staff reviewed the importance of listening carefully to the driver and following directions during an emergency.
Students practiced leaving the bus in an orderly manner and moving away from the vehicle once they had exited. The exercise provided students with an opportunity to become familiar with the process in a controlled environment, allowing them to focus on safety and preparedness without the pressure of a real emergency.
These drills are an important part of helping students understand that when an emergency occurs, remaining calm, listening to adults, and following directions are essential.
One of the most encouraging parts of the morning was watching our older students step up to help our younger Bulldogs.
Older students assisted younger students as they practiced exiting the bus, helping them navigate the process safely and confidently. Their willingness to look out for one another was a wonderful example of the caring and supportive community we strive to build throughout Westmoreland.
We would like to thank our Westmoreland transportation staff and bus drivers for organizing and leading this important safety exercise. Their dedication to our students extends far beyond the daily bus route.
We also appreciate the cooperation of our students and the positive attitude they brought to the drill. Their willingness to participate, listen, practice, and help one another made the morning a successful learning experience.
Safety is a team effort, and this drill was a great reminder of what can happen when our Bulldog community works together.
