Students from Mr. Notaroβs AP U.S. History and World History classes recently had the opportunity to take their classroom learning beyond the walls of the school by attending the Genesis Group Annual Candidates Forum at Hartβs Hill Inn. The event provided students with a firsthand look at local and regional government, offering a unique opportunity to hear from elected officials and candidates seeking public office while learning more about the responsibilities and challenges of public service.
Joining the students for this educational experience was Superintendent Migliori, who attended the event alongside the class to support their learning and participation.
Among the officials and candidates in attendance were Congressman John Mannion, Senator Joe Griffo, Assemblyman Brian Miller, and Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol. Throughout the event, students had the opportunity to listen to discussions, hear personal experiences from those serving in public office, and interact directly with community leaders.
During the forum, candidates shared insights into their backgrounds, experiences in public service, and the issues facing the communities they represent. Students were able to hear different perspectives, learn about the responsibilities associated with various government positions, and gain a better understanding of how decisions made at the local, state, and federal levels can impact everyday life.
One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was the opportunity for students to engage in conversations with the officials and candidates themselves. Meeting these individuals, listening to their experiences, and having the chance to ask questions helped bring topics discussed in the classroom to life. Experiences like these allow students to see government not simply as something they read about in textbooks, but as something that directly influences their schools, neighborhoods, and communities.
The visit also reinforced the importance of civic responsibility and active participation in the democratic process. By learning more about how public officials serve their constituents, how government operates, and how citizens can make their voices heard, students gained a greater appreciation for the role they can play in shaping their communities.
Opportunities such as the Genesis Group Annual Candidates Forum provide meaningful real-world learning experiences that encourage students to think critically, remain curious, and become more informed and engaged citizens.
We are proud of our students for taking advantage of this opportunity and grateful to Mr. Notaro, Superintendent Migliori, and the Genesis Group for helping make this valuable learning experience possible!
