We have been focusing on the importance of reading both in and out of school.

As in the past, the Westmoreland Central School District is offering a summer reading program for interested students. Typically for K-4 students, this year’s program expanded to include students up to sixth grade.

β€œWe want to promote reading all year long, not just during the school year,” Mary Anne O’Connell, primary elementary school principal, said. β€œTeachers are also working with kids on thinking strategies that are so important for students to become independent learners.”

Students get a head start on the upcoming school year, too. The district’s youngest students have an opportunity to get into the routine of school and meet teachers.

β€œSome are working with the teachers they are going to have,” O’Connell explained. β€œIt’s a great way to make new friends before school starts as well.”

The two-week program, which includes transportation, started on August 20 and runs through August 31. More than 100 students are participating.
