We have been focusing on the importance of reading both in and out of school.

As in the past, the Westmoreland Central School District is offering a summer reading program for interested students. Typically for K-4 students, this year’s program expanded to include students up to sixth grade.

“We want to promote reading all year long, not just during the school year,” Mary Anne O’Connell, primary elementary school principal, said. “Teachers are also working with kids on thinking strategies that are so important for students to become independent learners.”

Students get a head start on the upcoming school year, too. The district’s youngest students have an opportunity to get into the routine of school and meet teachers.

“Some are working with the teachers they are going to have,” O’Connell explained. “It’s a great way to make new friends before school starts as well.”

The two-week program, which includes transportation, started on August 20 and runs through August 31. More than 100 students are participating.
