two young boys with shelter manager John Treen, who is holding a rabbit

Mrs. Hecklau’s first grade class is giving back to our community.  Students donating money to Mr. Treen

In December, the class spent time making and decorating six gingerbread houses. The delicious and colorful creations were then put on display in the glass case next to the main office at the Primary Elementary School and raffled off to benefit the Stevens-Swan Humane Society of Oneida County.

On January 17, John Treen, shelter manager at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society, visited Mrs. Hecklau’s class, and was presented with the proceeds from the raffle - - a total donation of $186.

For his visit, Mr. Treen brought along a special, furry friend - - a rabbit recently rescued by the humane society. Students took turns petting the rabbit, and were even given the opportunity to give him a name!

“Every holiday season, my class spearheads a fundraiser for a local organization,” Mrs. Hecklau said. “Not only do we get to support an important cause, but students learn the importance of giving and volunteerism.”

The Stevens-Swan Humane Society of Oneida County, located on Horatio Street in Utica, takes in and cares for stray, homeless and abused animals, and strives to place them in loving, caring homes. The organization relies heavily on donations.

In the past, Mrs. Hecklau’s classes have supported organizations such as Operation Sunshine, Spring Farm Cares and Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Thank you to everyone who supported Mrs. Hecklau’s class’ fundraiser!
