Twelve seventh grade students, along with Mr. Kulpa, grades 7-9 guidance counselor, attended “Skilled Trades Day” at the Herkimer BOCES on May 10.
The students engaged in hands-on activities and learned about ironworking, conservation, construction, heavy equipment operation and electricity. Some of the activities students participated in included cutting a log using a two-man crosscut saw, moving pallets using a skid steer, repositioning tires using a backhoe and learning how to clean a chainsaw bar and sharpen its chain.
“It was a great learning opportunity for all of the students who attended,” Mr. Kupla said.
Professionals in the skilled trades industry also discussed the importance of skilled trades, training requirements and employment outlook.
