Senior Josh Davis is one of only three students in Oneida County to receive a scholarship from the Oneida County Music Educators Association (OCMEA).
The scholarship is given annually to at least one graduating senior who will be majoring in music in college. This year, three scholarships totaling more than $6,000 were awarded.
Davis received the first place scholarship worth $2,200. Nicole Williams, OCMEA president, presented the award to Davis at the Westmoreland Senior High School Music Concert on June 4.
To qualify, Davis had to audition before a panel of music teachers from various area school districts.
“Josh is a hardworking, devoted and trustworthy student,” Mrs. Cutler, Jr./Sr. High School music teacher and band instructor, said. “He has dedicated himself to his craft and has developed excellent practice habits and serves as an excellent representation of our music department, school and community. He is an outstanding person and musician and I am proud of him for accomplishing this level of excellence.”
Last fall, Davis became the first ever Westmoreland student selected to attend the New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) 83rd Annual Winter Conference in Rochester. Only a select group get to take part - - 6,460 students from across the state auditioned, 2,940 were recommended to NYSSMA and 889 were accepted. Davis was one of only eight snare drummers chosen from the 137 that auditioned.
Davis was selected to the conference’s All-State Band. The group, which was mentored and conducted by Dr. Cynthia Johnston Turner of the University of Georgia, performed at the Rochester Convention Center. Davis was one of four students to play in the battery section.
Davis is attending Messiah College in Pennsylvania in the fall to pursue a career in music education and technology.
Congratulations, Josh!
