For a group of Primary Elementary students, “trick” words aren’t so “tricky” anymore.
During the 2018-19 school year, about 20 students participated in a reading tutor program designed to help them learn words that are not spelled the way they sound. The program concluded with a special celebration of achievement in the Primary Elementary library on June 7.
As part of the program, from October until June, each participating student spent at least five minutes a day with a special area teacher or non-instructional staff member learning and practicing “trick” words using flashcards. The flashcards were organized in a box for each student based on his or her needs. As a student mastered words, flashcards with new words were added.
The program is organized and overseen by Mrs. Scoones, reading interventionist, and Mrs. McCarthy, teacher assistant. In addition to Mrs. Scoones and Mrs. McCarthy, the following staff members, or “reading buddies,” volunteered their time to work with students:
Mrs. Benesch – Business Office
Mrs. Bevins – Art
Mrs. Brown – Nurse
Ms. Burrows – Speech
Mr. DeBella – Business Office
Mrs. Greiner – Office
Mrs. Gutowski – Music
Mr. Kennedy – Business Administrator
Mr. Lampert – School Counselor
Mrs. Livermore – Library
Mrs. Matwijec – Library
Ms. Reynolds – Coding
Mr. Williams – Physical Education
According to Mrs. Scoones, the students learned more than 2,000 “trick” words!
Congratulations to all!
