There was no shortage of fun for many children in the Westmoreland Central School District this summer.
For the second year in a row, the district and Town of Westmoreland teamed up to jointly sponsor and offer “Camp Adventure” - - a free five-week summer program for children ages six to 12.
The fun-filled program, located at the Town of Westmoreland Town Park on Stop Seven Road, was open to children every Tuesday and Thursday from July 9 to August 8. It was staffed and run by eight Westmoreland students, who were overseen by Patrick Cardillo, computer aide at Westmoreland Primary Elementary School, and Chuck Hebbard, Town of Westmoreland deputy town supervisor.
“We are fortunate to have such a nice town park that was recently upgraded,” Cardillo said. “The brand new pavilion accommodated a variety of activities. My favorite part was how all of the kids, regardless of age, worked and played so well together.”
Daily activities included kickball, football, soccer, capture the flag, hiking and arts and crafts. On July 25, Bernie and Denise Szarek, owners of Szarek Greenhouses in Clinton, visited the program. They gave a lesson on planting and graciously donated plants for children to take home. Denise Szarek also serves on the Westmoreland Central School District Board of Education.
“Camp Adventure,” which averaged 70 children per week, concluded with a pizza and ice cream party on the final day. Both the Westmoreland Central School District and Town of Westmoreland plan on offering it again next summer.
Thank you to all who attended!
