On October 4, a group of seventh and eighth grade students, along with Mr. Kulpa, grades 7-9 guidance counselor, attended the third annual “Farming Your Future Day” at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds.

Students learned about the evolution of agriculture, the technology that is transforming the agriculture industry and careers in the agriculture and related fields. As part of the experience, students attended presentations on topics ranging from local dairy and honey bee farms to computer technology being used in John Deer tractors. There were also several exhibits and live animals.

Westmoreland’s students were particularly interested in drone technology used in farming and animal conservation.

“Students were able to see that careers in farming involve more than just plows, tractors and dirt,” Mr. Kulpa said. “Students learned that agriculture is important in small communities like Westmoreland, while at the same time, can impact the world.”

Seventh, eighth and ninth grade students from 22 school districts across the area attended the event.
