Matthew Kelsey was named the Bulldog Bookstore “Employee of the Month” for the month of September.
Matthew, a junior, is in his second year working at the bookstore located in the Jr./Sr. High School. For the 2019-20 school year, he has taken on a larger role, which Business teacher Mrs. Weissenberger says he’s handling well.
“Matthew’s work ethic is to be admired, and he dedicates his time and trains our underclassmen to follow in his successful footsteps,” Mrs. Weissenberger, who also oversees the bookstore, said. “Don't let his quiet demeanor fool you. He’s a tough cookie to please. Matthew has outstanding customer service skills and is accurate at keeping track of our profits, and he’s always thinking of new ways to bring in new products.”
Unlike last year, Matthew is now in charge of opening the bookstore on a daily basis. He’s embracing the opportunity and challenge.
“I usually get to school and open the bookstore around seven, before classes start,” Matthew said. “I help get the store ready for the rest of the day, including reviewing the inventory, checking the drawer and making sure our signage and advertisements are updated.”
The added responsibility is something Matthew doesn’t take lightly.
“It’s making me realize how my actions impact everyone else and the store as a whole,” Matthew explained. “Like if I count money wrong, that will affect future periods when other people are working.”
The Bulldog Bookstore is not associated with any class. Rather, students interested in acquiring a volunteer position at the store submit an application, resume and at least two references, and are then interviewed by Mrs. Weissenberger. Students work during free periods and lunch.
The store is open Monday-Friday during school hours and sometimes during special events. There’s plenty of “green and white” to choose from. Products for sale range from t-shirts to hoodies to snacks and school supplies. All profits are invested back into the student body in the form of scholarships to graduating seniors.
In addition to working at the bookstore, Matthew is also a member of the Varsity Track and Field and Hockey teams, Concert Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band and Drama Department. Although he has a bit more time to think about college and a future career, he’s interested in music and theater.
“I enjoy working and interacting with people, not just other employees, but also people who come in to buy something,” Matthew, when asked what he enjoys most about working at the bookstore, said.
Congratulations to Matthew Kelsey on being named the Bulldog Bookstore “Employee of the Month” for the month of September!
