The Section III Class C final was no different than their previous two games.
It went down to the wire.
Except this time, the Westmoreland-Oriskany Boys Varsity Soccer team - - which developed a knack for winning in dramatic fashion - - didn’t come out on top.
Westmoreland-Oriskany lost 2-1 in overtime to Bishop Grimes in the Section III Class C final on November 5 at VVS High School. It was the team’s third straight overtime game.
After a scoreless first half, which featured several clutch saves by Westmoreland-Oriskany goalkeeper Andrew Pysnik, Westmoreland-Oriskany struck first in the second half when Christian Uvino scored three minutes into the period. A goal by Bishop Grimes’ Jack Gutchess at the 22:40 mark tied the game at 1-1.
Westmoreland-Oriskany thought it scored the game-winning goal in the waning seconds of regulation, but the goal was disallowed after the side judge ruled an Westmoreland-Oriskany player was offside.
Byam Mughusu scored in the first 15-minute overtime period to win the game, and section title, for Bishop Grimes.
With the tough loss, Westmoreland-Oriskany, which was attempting to win its first-ever section title in boys’ soccer, concludes the 2019 season with a 15-5-1 overall record. Impressively, Westmoreland-Oriskany avenged each of its four losses during the regular season by beating each team they lost to the second time they played.
Congratulations to the Westmoreland-Oriskany Boys Varsity Soccer team on an outstanding 2019 season!
