The first grade class at the Primary Elementary School showcased their “Museum of Light & Sound” to family and friends on January 13.
The museum, located in the STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Math) room, contained devices made by first grade students in STEAM class that use sound to communicate over a distance. Students’ STEAM journals were also on display.
First grade students have STEAM class once a week. The museum was the culminating activity of a unit on the energy of light and sound, which allowed students to use their acquired knowledge to complete an engineering design challenge.
“Through the engineering design process, students were able to work in teams to solve problems as they arose in order to accomplish the final goal of communicating with sound,” Mrs. Riggles, STEAM teacher, said. “The project directly correlates with the new Science Learning Standards in New York State.”
Mrs. Riggles says the students tested their devices in STEAM class by asking each other a series of “yes” or “no” questions and answering with their devices. Students used the testing period to improve, and eventually perfect, their devices.
“STEAM education is so important and valuable,” Mrs. Riggles added. “It teaches students problem solving, creativity and innovation, which are all skills they will need as adults to be successful in our ever-changing world.”
