five Westmoreland mathletes with medals and trophies

It’s a THREE-peat!

For the third consecutive year, the Westmoreland Jr./Sr. High School “Mathletics” team took home the gold!

The team, composed of students in grades 7-12, accumulated more points than any other school in the “Small Schools” division during the 2019-20 “Mathletics” season, which featured six monthly competitions.  Group photo

For each competition, five members from each team are eligible to score points in an individual round and two team rounds. The individual round includes a test consisting of 10 questions involving logic, arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry and number theory. In the first team round, team members work together to solve and answer a multiple part question. In the second team round, team members participate in a “math relay,” where they sit in a row and pass answers to each other. Each answer passed back to the next student on the team becomes part of the recipient's question. At the end of each competition, point totals for each school are announced and the top three scoring teams in each division are awarded ribbons. At the end of the season, the top three teams in each division based on a cumulative point total are awarded trophies and medals.

Westmoreland has participated in “Mathletics” since the 1960s, when the competition was first introduced to Central New York. Although Westmoreland teams have experienced success in the past, they have never placed first three years in a row until now. The unprecedented and historic feat will be rewarded with a banquet this spring.

Mr. Darrah, “Mathletics” advisor and math teacher at the Jr./Sr. High School, is very proud of this year’s team. For many of the team members, it was their first year competing for Westmoreland.

“I was nervous going into this year,” commented Mr. Darrah. “The team lost a lot of top scoring seniors last year, and at the start of the school year, we did not even have five members needed for a competition. It was great to have so many new members join. Their winning record is a testament to their dedication to the organization. I am looking forward to next year!”

Congratulations to the Westmoreland Jr./Sr. High School “Mathletics” team on its first place finish in the “Small Schools” division!
