Every June before the end of the school year, students in grades K-6 participate in a fun tradition that started more than 40 years ago - - “Olympic Day.”

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and closure of school, this year’s “Olympic Day” had to be cancelled. Yet - - it is not being forgotten.  Westmo logo

Physical Education teacher Mr. Williams, who organizes the event, and Mr. Cardillo, created a tribute video to celebrate the iconic day. The video features special messages from several Olympians, including:

Erin Hamlin – Luge, United States
Kaitlin Sandeno – Swimming, United States
Bershawn Jackson – Hurdles, United States
Nastia Liukin – Gymnastics, United States
Pandelela Rinong – Diver, Malaysia
Brian Boitano – Figure Skating, United States

In the video, they all encourage Westmoreland’s students to stay active this summer.

“I wanted to create the video so students had something to look forward to,” Mr. Williams said.

“Olympic Day” typically kicks off in the morning with an opening ceremony at the Primary Elementary School. Each class, while carrying a unique team banner, parades around the bus circle to Olympic-themed music in front of family and friends. Classes in each grade then go head-to-head in various track and field events and other games throughout the day. When not competing, classes take turns eating lunch with their families and playing in the Primary and Upper Elementary School gyms, where there are more games and bounce houses.
