staff, gathered at desks, masked and distanced

The Westmoreland Central School District held its annual “Opening Day” - - marking the official start of the 2020-21 school year - - over the course of two days, consistent with health and safety regulations in place due to COVID-19. Instructional staff met on September 2 and school-related staff met on September 3.

Mr. Migliori speaks to staff

Both days, and while maintaining social distance, staff gathered in the Jr./Sr. High School Auditorium, where they were welcomed by Board of Education President John Acee and Superintendent of Schools Rocco Migliori. For all staff, Superintendent Migliori reviewed the district’s reopening plan, procedures and protocols and provided an update on the district’s capital project. For instructional staff, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Pupil Personnel Mr. Polera provided an update on various curriculum and instruction topics. Primary Elementary School Principal/Coordinator of Special Education Mrs. O’Connell and Director of Technology Mr. Cieri also gave updates.

“While things will look and feel different this year, we look forward to the 2020-21 school year with the same excitement, enthusiasm and expectations,” Superintendent Migliori said. “It remains our mission to provide the highest quality education and experience possible.”

Staff also participated in several mandated trainings covering topics such as COVID-19 safety and health protocols, the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), “Right to Know,” mental health and sexual harassment. This year, all of the trainings were conducted virtually. Instructional staff were also given time to spend in their classrooms.

“I recognize there’s a little apprehension, maybe even fear, but I know there’s also excitement as we welcome all of our kids back,” Superintendent Migliori said. “They want to be here and that’s a credit to our entire school community.”

“Our reopening plan was designed and based on feedback from our school community,” Superintendent Migliori added. “We are committed to doing everything we can to carry out the plan safely and successfully. We also recognize the plan may have to be updated or adjusted as we progress throughout the school year.”
