Twenty-three students were formally inducted into the Westmoreland High School Kioga Chapter of the National Honor Society on December 1.
Due to COVID-19, this year's ceremony was held virtually on Google Meet. However, despite its distant nature, there was still a personal touch.
“Upon introduction, new inductees shared their thoughts on what being inducted into National Honor Society meant to them and how they planned to incorporate the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, character and service into their daily lives,” Mrs. Lane, National Honor Society advisor, said. “It was refreshing to listen to their thoughts.”
The accomplishment - - the product of hard work, commitment and community involvement over the course of several years - - left the new inductees with a great sense of pride.
“Being inducted into National Honor Society shows I have been both a good student and person,” Caleb Miller said. “I am honored to be inducted alongside such a distinguished group.”
“I am proud that my character and academic achievements have made me worthy of induction,” Dakota Saxe added.
Membership into the National Honor Society does not end with induction. Rather, inductees are expected to continue to grow as individuals and stay active in both the school and greater Westmoreland communities.
The current Westmoreland High School Kioga Chapter of the National Honor Society is giving back through the creation of a “comfort closet.” The closest contains hygiene products and winter clothing for district families in need. National Honor Society members continually collect donations, keep an inventory and work to ensure those in need have access to the comfort closet by getting them in touch with the appropriate school personnel.
“I will always be looking for ways to improve myself for the better and help as many people as possible,” Kaitlyn Amarasinghe, inductee, said.
“No one should ever stop learning and growing, and I know National Honor Society will help me grow as a person by learning from others and helping others,” Payton Kingwater, inductee, chimed.
