Dear Parents/Guardians:
Despite students learning remotely until at least January 11, the district is still mandated to disclose positive COVID-19 cases.
Please know, since the start of Thanksgiving Recess and transition to remote instruction, six staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 - - two at the Jr./Sr. High School; two at the Upper Elementary School and two at the Primary Elementary School. Additionally, four staff members are currently in quarantine awaiting test results - - two at the Upper Elementary School; one at the Primary Elementary School; and one bus driver. Due to privacy laws, the district is unable to share the identity of any of the staff members who have tested positive or are in quarantine awaiting test results.
As in the past, and in accordance with state and local protocols, the district is working with the Oneida County Department of Health to complete contact tracing. If it is determined other individuals were in close proximity to the staff members who tested positive, they will be notified by health officials, who will provide further guidance. Fortunately, due to remote instruction, contact tracing will not involve students. Consequently, the decision to transition to remote instruction for the holiday season is helping to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, as intended. It has also become apparent that in-person instruction would have become impossible due to the positive cases and quarantines, and the staff shortage that would have resulted.
As always, the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community are our number one priority. I am communicating this information in an effort to be as transparent as possible, not to cause concern. Our public health agencies have been outstanding partners throughout this entire situation. The district joins them in emphasizing the necessity of sharing information and acting with precaution throughout these extraordinary circumstances.
Thank you for your continued cooperation, understanding and support as we all work together to navigate this challenging time. Please remember to follow all protocols concerning COVID-19, including the wearing of a mask, frequent hand washing and social distancing.
Sincerely,
Rocco Migliori
Superintendent of Schools
