Dear Parents,
As we approach the end of our first semester, we have just finished testing 20% of the student body. Much to our delight we have had 0 positive tests. We are hopefully entering a time when the infection rate in our area will continue to decline. We also understand the importance of students physically being in school for both academic and social emotional needs.
During the fall semester, we decided to be fluid with the changing times by allowing students to switch from hybrid learning to remote learning and vice versa. This inconsistency created a situation that was extremely difficult on our teachers and staff. So for the spring semester, we are requiring students to make a decision on their desired mode of learning for the entire semester. Meaning if they choose to be remote, they are committing to that decision for the remainder of the school year. If they choose in-person learning, they are committing to be in-person every day that
their cohort is scheduled to be on campus. We understand that students may not feel comfortable returning to inperson instruction but please make that decision based on health concerns.
We understand that this may be a discussion that needs to be made as a family, but we are asking that you provide your decision to your child’s guidance counselor by February 5th. This will help us in planning for the upcoming semester. We have spent much time ensuring classrooms, cafeterias, and music classes meet the proper social
distancing guidelines. We have purchased many cleaning supplies and our maintenance department is working overtime spraying down rooms. A great deal of planning has gone into creating the safest environment for every student to return to school.
At the time this letter is being written, a decision on extra-curricular activities has not yet been made. Students who are fully remote due to fear of the virus need to question how school is less safe than participating in an athletic contest or performing opportunity. We ask this question because as a school we feel that the best place for students to learn is in the classroom with their teachers and peers.
Please email your child’s counselor no later than February 5th indicating your decision for your child to remain fully remote or switch to hybrid learning. (kcampbell@westmorelandschool.org or kkulpa@westmorelandschool.org).
Thank you,
Joshua Saxton
