In a world turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Mulvihill’s seventh and eighth grade math students wanted to make a difference.

After more than a week of planning and getting the word out, his students held a Bottle & Can Drive at the Jr./Sr. High School on January 30.  Students with bottles and cans

The benefits were two-fold. Students were able to assist some very worthy causes and the initiative counted as their midterm.

“Students learned the importance of giving back to their community while also working as a team and using their math knowledge to optimize profit,” Mr. Mulvihill said. “As part of the effort, students explored the costs associated with doing a bottle and can drive and chose the best method to create the largest profit.”

The students raised $1,355! After a vote, the proceeds were donated to five charities – The American Cancer Society, The Rescue Mission of Utica, The Stevens-Swan Humane Society, The Trevor Project and Hopeland.

Thank you to everyone who donated!
