Fifth and sixth grade students in the Zone for Imagination, Innovation and Inspiration (Zi3) Club and Fifth Grade Enrichment Group put their creativity - - and building - - skills to the test.
During the month of March, the students participated in the Mohawk Valley Health System’s (MVHS) “Build Your Own Hospital” engineering challenge.
For the challenge, students were asked to use common household items to build a hospital containing a main entrance, ambulance/emergency department entrance, helipad, patient tower, greenspace and signage, and then submit a photo to MVHS. The challenge was open to students in grades K-8.
“The MVHS ‘Build Your Own Hospital’ engineering challenge focused on women in construction, so we asked some of our Zi3 Club and Fifth Grade Enrichment ladies if they wanted to work together on the challenge,” said Mrs. Davis, Zi3 coordinator. “They followed an engineering design process that started off by researching characteristics of the most state-of-the-art hospitals in the world. After, they sketched their designs and made notes of the best features. Finally, they used various recycled materials, such as aluminum foil, cardboard, styrofoam, popsicle sticks and other craft materials to create their 3D design.”
Westmoreland’s hospital was built by the following fifth and sixth grade students:
Breana Bulger – Grade 6
Alina Kulpa – Grade 6
Jenna Smith – Grade 6
Emma Szarek – Grade 6
Julianna Otis – Grade 5
Madison Robinson – Grade 5
Isabella Smith – Grade 5
Kylie Young – Grade 5
MVHS will announce the first, second and third place winners of the challenge on March 29. All winners will receive a LEGO prize and certificate.
