The award was given to Calogero for her first place finish in an essay contest organized by the DAR Fort Stanwix Chapter. The contest asked area students to write an essay about our American heritage and our responsibility for preserving it. More specifically, students had to explain how the combined actions of so many good citizens keep our nation moving forward.

For her first place finish, Calogero received a cash prize, certificate and pin.

DAR is an organization with a deeply rich history while also being truly relevant in today’s world. Approximately 930,000 women have joined the organization since it was founded more than 125 years ago. Any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join DAR.
