Kindergarten students put their “green thumbs” to the test.
In celebration of Earth Day, the students capped off a four-week unit on plants in library class by planting a forsythia tree in the Primary Elementary School courtyard on May 7.
As part of the unit, the kindergarteners learned how plants grow and change and how they keep our planet clean. During week one, they watched a video about the plant life cycle and completed a worksheet based on the video. During week two, they watched a video about Earth Day and discussed how they can make a change to help our planet. During week three, they read “The Tiny Seed” by Eric Carle and watched a video based on the book. Both the book and video describe how a plant grows and changes. Finally, during week four, they read “Franklin Plants a Tree” by Paulette Bourgeois.
A few lucky students helped Mrs. Livermore, librarian, plant the forsythia tree into the ground. The tree is conveniently located just outside the library so students can watch it grow and keep track of its progress.
The Primary Elementary School courtyard contains several other trees and plants, many of which are in memory of former students and teachers.
