June 8, 2021

Dear School Community:

Late last evening, June 7, 2021, Governor Cuomo released new guidance on the wearing of masks on school grounds. The new guidance modified previous guidance and now allows schools to decide whether or not to mandate the wearing of masks outside of school buildings.

According to a brief survey posted on the district website, almost 82 percent of respondents, mostly parents, were in favor of relaxing the mask mandate inside school buildings, so I assume most would be in favor of relaxing the mandate outside school buildings. Therefore, effective today, June 8, 2021, we will no longer be requiring the use of face masks outdoors on school grounds, including during sports and extracurricular outdoor activities. This will be subject to change should we experience an increase in infections in our community.

Please know that the revised guidance document states that no student, teacher, staff member or visitor may be prevented from voluntarily wearing an acceptable face mask on school grounds.

The CDC has advised Governor Cuomo against revising the requirement to wear masks inside of school buildings. So, at this time, masks are still required inside school buildings.

Sincerely,

Rocco Migliori
Superintendent of Schools
