In celebration of Gay Pride Month in June, the Jr./Sr. High School Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Club held a “Westmo’s Got Pride” event on June 14 and 15. The event took place over the course of two days so both Cohort A and Cohort B could participate.
For the event, students and staff wore “Pride” colors, verbiage and face coverings in support of the LGBTQ+ community. On June 15, participating staff members, each wearing an assigned “Pride” color, gathered for a group photo.
“Members of the GSA Club lead by example and encourage their peers to be respectful and empathetic to everyone, despite any differences,” said Mrs. Muir, school social worker. “We hope that the ‘Westmo’s Got Pride’ event will lead to a more positive culture in our school that values differences and embraces acceptance.”
“Promoting inclusivity aligns with our district vision statement,” added Mrs. Joseph, Spanish teacher. “The statement specifically asks students to, ‘embrace who they are and look forward to who they can become as they prepare to be respectful, productive citizens in a diverse and evolving society.’”
The event had a positive impact on many students. According to one student, who wishes to remain anonymous, the event is already making a difference.
“I’m speechless,” said the student. “It’s just so nice that my fellow students and teachers help support people who need it and make people feel accepted and appreciated.”
Thank you to everyone who participated in “Westmo’s Got Pride!”
