For only the second time in the last 29 years, two graduating seniors were named “Student of the Year.”
Both Clare Calogero and Jason Robinson earned the prestigious award, which was announced and presented by Mrs. Lane, Jr./Sr. High School Social Studies teacher and department chair, at Commencement on June 18.
“This was one of the hardest decisions the committee has had to make in more than two decades,” said Mrs. Lane. “There were several worthy candidates and eventual nominees. The Class of 2021 is an extraordinary group.”
Clare Calogero is the daughter of Michael and Christine Calogero. Clare served as Class President, as well as Treasurer of Student Council, Drama Club and National Honor Society. She also played soccer and softball and held various roles in several drama and choral productions. She has been a ballet dancer since the age of three.
Jason Robinson is the son of James and Erin Robinson. Jason served as Class Treasurer, as well as Vice President of Tri-M and Drama Club. Other school activities included National Honor Society, Student Council, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Saxophone Ensemble, Select Choir, Broadway Voices and Team Lead. Jason is also an accomplished wheelchair athlete. In 2019, he was named a U.S. Paralympics Track & Field High School All-American in the 100m, 800m, 1500m and 5000m – the first time he was named an All-American in four events. At the 2019 New York State Track & Field Championships, he placed first in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m wheelchair races, setting a new personal record in each event. He also won the 1600m and 3200m races in 2018.
Over the course of their high school careers, both Clare and Jason took several advanced placement and college-level courses.
Clare is attending Providence College to major in biology. Jason is attending the University of Illinois to major in bioengineering.
In order to be named “Student of the Year,” a graduating senior must demonstrate strong leadership, exhibit excellent character and be nominated by a faulty member.
Congratulations, Clare and Jason!
