Szarek competed in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympic Games held from July 28 to August 7 at Humble High School in Houston.  Emma running

Szarek raced in the 800 meters (12-year-old division), and finished with a time of 2:37.7. She also raced in the 1500 meters (12-year-old division), and finished with a time of 5:27.8.

The AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sports. During its early years, the AAU served as a leader in international sport representing the United States in the international sports federations. The AAU worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the Olympic Games. After the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages beginning at the grass roots level. The philosophy of “Sports for All, Forever,” is shared by nearly 700,000 participants and over 150,000 volunteers.

The AAU Junior Olympic Games is the largest multi-sport event in the country.
