Mrs. Riggles, K-4 Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM) teacher, Mrs. Cittadino, Jr./Sr. High School Living Environment teacher, and Miss Whittaker, Jr./Sr. High School Chemistry teacher, attended the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) 2021 Annual Conference in Rochester the weekend of November 5.

The conference, for STANYS members, featured several networking, professional development and workshop opportunities in elementary, intermediate and high school science, including earth science, chemistry, biology and physics. Mrs. Riggles, Mrs. Cittadino and Miss Whittaker specifically worked to align curriculum to the new Next Generation Learning Standards for Science. They also attended workshops focused on how to engage students in a post-COVID-19 world, help students model and encourage students to use "storylines" in class.

"STANYS is a great event because you become connected with other teachers from all over the state," Miss Whittaker said. "It's an opportunity to see what others are doing in their classrooms, work through new ideas with like-minded people and learn things to bring back to our district and ultimately make our own classrooms better."

Attendees were eligible to earn Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits. A virtual option was also offered.

STANYS is New York State’s oldest and most respected professional organization of science educators that promotes excellence in science education. Its mission is to work with educators and communities to provide opportunities for all students to participate in and learn science.
