During the month of December, third grade students discovered how communities can impact the world in social studies and learned about adaptations in science. As a supporting activity, the students raised and donated more than $720 to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The WWF is the world’s leading conservation organization, and works in nearly 100 countries. At every level, the organization collaborates with people around the world to develop and deliver innovative solutions that protect communities, wildlife and the places in which they live. Its work focuses on six key areas: climate, food, forests, freshwater, oceans and wildlife. Some accomplishments include saving black rhinos in Africa and black bucks in the Himalayas.
The third grade students actively encouraged others to support their cause, and successfully solicited donations from the entire Upper Elementary School. The Jr./Sr. High School and National Honor Society also donated $238. In addition to their fundraising efforts, the third grade students individually researched endangered animals in social studies and used that information to write a newspaper article in English Language Arts (ELA). In math, word problems referenced what students learned about the WWF.
The fun learning experience was a great way to connect social studies, science, math and ELA.
