Dear School Community:

As you most likely are aware, on Sunday, February 27, Governor Hochul announced the state mask requirement in schools is ending, effective Wednesday, March 2. According to Governor Hochul, the decision to end the mask requirement is based on the analysis of several key COVID-19 data trends and after consulting with health and education experts, as well as parents, teachers and school administrators. The announcement also follows recent changes in metrics used by the CDC to determine risk and transmission levels in communities.  Westmo logo

Please know, Governor Hochul stated local governments could still choose to implement a mask requirement in schools or reintroduce one at any time. She also left the door open to requirements and mandates returning if there is another spike in COVID-19 cases. With that said, Oneida County has chosen not to implement a mask requirement in schools beyond March 2. So, as of the start of the school day on March 2, the wearing of masks in school here at Westmoreland, on buses and at all other functions/events on school grounds will be optional rather than mandated.

While the mask requirement is ending, any student, staff member, parent or other member of the school community who would still like to wear a mask is free to do so and their decision should not be questioned. In addition – the district will not tolerate the bullying, harassment or discrimination of anyone who chooses to wear a mask. Please be respectful of everyone’s personal preferences and communicate any concerns to school administration.

Given the very low infection rate and declining number of COVID-19 cases, in the coming weeks, school administration and the Board of Education will review the district’s “Reopening Plan” in its entirety and determine if any other changes are appropriate. In the meantime, the district will continue to contact trace to the best of its ability, conduct testing and distribute at-home tests. The district will also maintain increased cleaning/disinfection measures and continue to encourage social distancing and good hygiene practices.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a long and tiring ordeal for almost two years now. I want to personally acknowledge staff, students, parents and community members for their support. I know not everyone has agreed with all of the mandates, requirements and laws, but our school community, as a whole, has handled this unprecedented situation with respect and civility – so thank you.

Hopefully, we just took one more big step towards “normalcy,” and stay there.

Sincerely,

Rocco Migliori
Superintendent of Schools
