The Westmoreland Central School District’s Zone for Imagination, Innovation and Inspiration (Zi3) is a place where students, staff and community members can collaborate, research, design, build and inspire. The Zi3 is thrilled to once again host in-person summer camps!

The Zi3 is holding four summer camps for Westmoreland students during the months of July and August (full details below) – “Mythbusters Camp,” “Maker Camp,” “Under the Sea Camp” and “Energy Zone Camp.”

There is a small fee of $10 per child per camp to pay for materials and supplies. Payment may be made by cash or check on the first day of the camp your child chooses to attend. Please make checks payable to “Westmoreland Central School.”

Mythbusters Camp
Grades 4-8 (entering)
July 11-15 (Monday-Friday)
9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. daily
$10 donation

Students will become “Junior Mythbusters” by participating in various challenges to prove or disprove a known myth. Should the students find a myth is false, they must try to find a solution to the problem to make it work! Some challenges include, “can a domino crush a car,” “can you make a working parachute using only duct tape,” “can you walk on water using flotation devices on your feet” and “can you pull the tablecloth out from a completely set table?” Students will also safely perform “Mythbusters-like” experiments, including making their own fizzy bombs and creating color explosions!

Maker Camp
Grades 4-8 (entering)
July 18-22 (Monday-Friday)
9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. daily
$10 donation

Students will participate in various “maker” activities to create their own masterpieces. Projects will include – recreating Norman Rockwell’s illustration of “The Connoisseur'' in the Saturday Evening Post, DIY bird feeders to help feed feathered friends, double exposure drawings using the Epilog laser engraver, animal collages and making your own ice cream. There will also be field trips to Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute in Utica and Griffiss Sculpture Park in Rome.

Under the Sea Camp
Grades 5-8 (entering)
August 8-12 (Monday-Friday)
9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. daily
$10 donation

Students will explore what lies beneath the surface of the ocean as well as how to protect and preserve the resource. They will explore coral reefs, sea animal life and dangers to the environment. Projects will include – cleaning up a mock oil spill, creating an automation aquarium that has sharks and fish that move, DIY coral reef, virtual field trip exploration of the Great Barrier Reef, live virtual meeting with sea animals through the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, making your own edible underwater treat and more!

Energy Zone Camp
Grades 5-8 (entering)
August 15-19 (Monday-Friday)
9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. daily
$10 donation

Students will use the engineering design process to explore how to harness the wind, sun and water to create energy. Students will experiment with water bottle rockets, solar cars and ovens (to make a snack of course), as well as tetrahedron kites and wind powered crafts. They will also go on a field trip to the Energy Zone in Utica. It is going to be a blast!
