On May 31, 2022, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) issued “new revised” isolation and quarantine guidance concerning COVID-19. The guidance supersedes previous isolation and quarantine guidance. An exception related to quarantine and isolation was added for children’s attendance at childcare and early childhood education settings. Language related to boosters and being “up to date” was also updated.  Westmo logo

Summary

Assuming symptoms do not emerge, a person does not have to quarantine after close contact if they are up to date on their COVID-19 vaccinations or:

-Have completed their primary series but are not yet eligible for a booster. -Have received 1 booster but are not yet recommended to get a 2nd booster. -Have received 1 booster but are not yet eligible for a 2nd booster.

Who can get a booster:

Recommended 1 booster – everyone ages 5 years and older should get 1 booster after completing their COVID-19 vaccine primary series.

Recommended 2 boosters – adults 50 years and older and people ages 12 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised.

Quarantine Exception for Schools and Child Care Programs (K-12):

Exposed or potentially exposed (e.g. in a classroom with an infected individual for at least 15 minutes) students, teachers and staff who must quarantine because they are not up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines (i.e., are unvaccinated, partially vaccinated or are eligible for a booster(s) but have not received them) can attend work at school, school-based extracurricular activities and eligible childcare programs for school-age children during the quarantine period if they undergo recommended testing. However, these individuals must continue to quarantine as otherwise required outside of school.
