Mr. Andre Short, Jr./Sr. High School English teacher and co-advisor of the Podcast Club, was selected as a “Summer Scholar” from a country-wide applicant pool to attend the National Endowment for the Humanities’ (NEH) institute “Common Ground: Americans and their land during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era.”
The NEH is a federal agency that supports enrichment opportunities at colleges, universities and cultural institutions, allowing teachers to study with experts in humanities disciplines.
As part of the opportunity, Mr. Short will participate in a two-week program held in Manhattan, New York City and at SUNY Cortand’s Camp Huntington at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, spending a week in each location. During the professional development program, participating teachers will engage with visiting scholars and explore museums and historic sites while practicing the skills of “reading the landscape” to understand the intertwined history of each region during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. The program is taking place July 11-23.
Mr. Short and his fellow participants will be able to bring back and incorporate their experiences into their respective classrooms, benefiting students.
